GReddy Performance Product’s (GPP) Irvine, California, location hosted a hotbed of car activity during their annual open house, sponsored drift/show car meet, and unveiling of Boost Brigade Summer ’17 apparel at their main headquarters. GPP pulled out all the stops at this year’s free admission event with plenty of food, a raffle drawing for free gifts, discounts on parts sold at the event, and a special look at many new and soon to be released items and products launching soon.
Inside the showroom, the crowds were eagerly lined up to purchase many of the one-day only sale items available up to 40% off.
In 2016, GReddy debuted a new streetwear and apparel lineup called Boost Brigade. GReddy touted their Boost Brigade items as stylish apparel and gear for the true tuning enthusiast. The mindful creators of this clothing lineup knew that owning a catchy name like Boost Brigade would need to necessitate strong visual appeal as well. Working with many iconic figures in the street apparel industry, the team created a compelling apparel lineup that immediately caught wind of the tuner market and appealed to their masses.
Boost Brigade T-shirts, hoodies and limited edition collectables were flying off the headquarters’ showroom shelves.
Making their debut for first time were a limited quantity of GReddy/ GPP products including their GPP and KG21 steering wheels. As a limited prerelease item, only a quantity of ten of each steering wheel was being sold.
Also limited to ten pieces, special edition Ken Gushi steering wheels were also up for grabs. The 340mm KG21 steering wheel sports Gushi’s signature logo along with the GReddy race stripes and matching stitching. Although both the GReddy and KG21 steering wheels quickly sold out less than an hour into the open house event, they are now available though their website for pre-ordering.
The highly anticipated GReddy Sirius gauges were finally released this summer. Unique in design in comparison to gauge cluster sold on the market today is the Sirius Vision which is designed using a thin-film electro luminescent display. The unique clear screen with intense yellow lighting allows the unit to be used as a heads-up display or to be combined with an analog Sirius Meter to overlay additional information. The GReddy Sirius control unit is required to operate the Sirius Vision, Sirius Meter, and Sirius Unify.
GReddy’s reemergence into the old school tuner market has amassed a number of new products for vehicles like the Honda EG Civic Hatchback.
“GReddy’s returning back to our roots and will be continually coming out with new and improved products for older model vehicles such as the Civic EK, Integra DC2, Supra JZ80, and Nissan S14. The GReddy Supreme SP exhaust for the Civic EG was just one example of taking a popular exhaust and revamping it with 3-inch diameter piping and full 304 stainless steel canister to cater to turbo or larger displacement engine swaps,” states Kenji Sumino, VP of GReddy USA.
It never fails, every time we visit the GReddy facility and manage to sneak into their R&D test facility, we find ourselves in for a treat as they are constantly working on something new and exciting. Among the new products were a few soon to be released products were not allowed to disclose. Sorry! It was requested by GReddy management to keep things under wraps but keep your eyes and ears peeled for details on new and exciting parts coming soon!
Sitting on the Bendpak lifts were some familiar sites. The Mackin 86 Pikes Peak machine was currently going through additional modifications since it last campaigned in PPIHC, which we featured.
Sitting just behind the blue machine was the original GReddy drift car that Ken Gushi competed during the 2015 FD season with a turbocharged-EJ25 power plant. The Scion FR-S was eventually retired from competition but not before it received a 2JZ power plant. It now serves as a demo car for Toyota and is used primarily for ride and drive at various events and track locations.
Speaking of retired vehicles, this EF-chassis Civic is owned by Sumino. Admittedly, when he first purchased the car, he mentioned it was to be simple build. As most car enthusiasts know too well, one thing always leads to another and before we knew it, the Civic was stripped to its shell in preparation for a complete makeover.
Finding parts for a 26-year-old car in good condition isn’t an easy task. Sumino began his search and collecting parts from across the world. Both the SiR front and rear bumper were sourced from Japan. A collection of 2 hoods were obtained from overseas. The rear seats were freighted from Russia of all places, but the fabric material was mismatched from the JDM front seats so another rear seat was gathered from Europe.
Sumino is currently contemplating on whether to swap out the factory suspension in favor of a 5×114.3-bolt pattern Type R setup, or convert to an earlier 4×114.3 JDM Type R hub. In the meantime, he’s managed to track down some immaculate condition SSR NEO wheels.
“Call me old school, but I prefer 15-inch wheels on the EF,” says Sumino.
Stay tuned as future modifications call for a turbocharged B16 or B18C engine swap. Watch out Jonathan Wong, he is gunning for you!
In anticipation of the new Civic Type R hitting the market, GReddy designed their SP-R system consisting of free-flowing 3-inch diameter piping with triple tips. The outer tips measure in at 115mm while the center comes in at 102mm. The SP-R exhaust features a fully functional center tip. It’s interesting to note that the OEM center exhaust tip is actually non-functional, and was designed primarily as a Helmholtz resonator.
Coming soon to the GReddy lineup is the GTX-R Tuner Turbo Kit for the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ. GReddy engineers redesigned the turbo kit to deliver an increased mid to high level power delivery, boost response, and overall peak horsepower output by using a properly sized turbo housing, compressor wheel design, and upgraded turbo kit components.
The newly redesigned turbo kit uses a Garrett GTX2871R turbocharger with a rated power range of 340 to 560hp and a larger, centered Type 24 intercooler for both stock and built FA20 engines.
The Pandem Rocket Bunny wide body kit for the E30-chassis BMW improves the look of an otherwise mild mannered vehicle by adding 50mm front and 75mm rear over fenders, which allows for a wider wheel and tire fitment. The eight-piece Pandem kit maintains the original body contour and boxy vehicle design, but still allows the BMW a wider track width for better grip and styling.
The popularity of the Datsun 240Z increased ten folds thanks in part to the collaboration efforts of GReddy Racing and Sung Kang—otherwise known as Han from the hit Fast and Furious movie franchise. This ’73 240Z made its debut at the 2015 SEMA show and was an immediate hit.
During the SEMA revealing, this was a one-off Rocky Bunny wide body kit painted in Kilimanjaro White, which eventually went into production. The L28 engine was replaced with a high-compression (12.0:1) RB26 with individual throttle bodies. A set of 17-inch Volk TE37V wheels, wrapped in Nitto NT01 tires adds the final touches to this Datsun, which Kang nicknamed Fugu Z.
In anticipation of the latest race simulation game to hit consoles, GReddy teamed up with Slightly Mad Studios to showcase Project CARS 2 and give participants a chance to show their driving skills behind a driving simulator in a Time Attack contest against Boost Brigade Pro Drivers. By mid-afternoon, Ken Gushi recorded the fastest time using the Buttonwillow #13CW track configuration. Special prizes from ViewSonic and Sparco were awarded to the people who managed to topple the Boost Brigade drivers’ lap time and become the fastest driver of the day. Project CARS 2 provides over 180 cars, the largest track roster on console, and nine motorsport disciplines to choose from. It will be available later this year in December of 2017 for PC and gaming consoles.
Fresh off their return from Round 6 of the Formula Drift Championship series in Monroe, Washington, Boost Brigade Brand Ambassadors for the 2017 Formula Drift Championship Series consisting of Ken Gushi, Robbie Nishida, Michael Essa, Jhonnattan Castro, and Dan Burkett brought their pro drift cars to the GReddy HQ for display.
Dan “Rad Dan” Burkett’s ’95 Mark IV Toyota Supra has gone through a number of modifications leading up to this year as he competes in the Formula Drift Championship series. Burkett owns Rad Industries, a shop that specializes in custom fabrication and engine builds.
The 2JZ-GTE engine was punched out using a Brian Crower 3.4-liter stroker kit and 9.5:1 compression pistons. The 900hp/800 TQ engine is powered by a BorgWarner EFR 9174 turbo with custom atmospheric wastegate dump tubes.
Robbie Nishida began drifting in the US at a competitive level back in 2005, in the time since he worked up the ranks, smoking his tires in numerous drift series around the world including FD Asia and D1 Grand Prix.
Jerry Yang of Jerry Yang Racing worked his magic by custom fabricating the entire 2013 Nissan GTR chassis and engine components. Check out that dry carbon dash! The bare interior delivers a clear message that this vehicle is all business.
2013 Formula D Champion Mike Essa of Essa Autosports and his BMW M3 currently sit in sixth place in the 2017 FD standings, with only 36 points separating him from a third place finish in the championship standings.
The BMW is powered by a heavily tuned version of the S54 engine originally found in the E46 M3. Using a BorgWarner EFR 9174 turbocharger, Doc Race intake manifold, and custom forged internals. The engine was tuned with a Motec m130 ECU on Ignite Red 114 ethanol race fuel to deliver over 1,000 rwhp.
Inside the cabin resides a slew of Sparco safety equipment, while a Samsonas five-speed sequential box handles. A Clutch Masters twin disc clutch spins the Driveshaft Shop carbon driveshaft. Suspension upgrades include a set of ST Coilovers and Wisefab suspension arms.
The Jhonnattan Castro Racing Toyota 86 partnered up with Papadakis Racing to compete in this year’s FD series. It packs a mean Toyota 2AR engine with a custom Borg Warner EFR turbo was built to deliver 900 rwhp.
Suspension handling is delivered though KW Suspensions 3-way coilover suspension, Wisefab control arms and knuckles. A set of Advan Racing RG III wheels wrapped in Nexen Tires (245/40-17 front and 275/40-18 rear) sits flush under the Rocket Bunny body kit’s widened fender.
Ken Gushi took some time to meet and greet attendees at this year’s event. We stopped him for a quick photo in front of his GReddy Racing Nexen Tire Toyota Racing 86.
Sparkle Hung’s Nissan S13 equipped with a Rocket Bunny kit has been tearing up the show scene in Southern California.
This Nissan has endured extensive custom fabrication to both exterior and interior over the years.
