  • Dai Yoshihara enters his 8th season of Formula DRIFT with his Subaru BRZ.
  • New livery features inspiration from Subaru’s Super GT race team.
  • The 2021 season of Formula DRIFT kicks off at Road Atlanta this weekend on May 7-8.

It’s that time of the year as drift fans from around the world start getting excited for the season opener of Formula DRIFT. 2021’s first round will be taking place at Road Atlanta, which historically is one the wildest and most well-attended events of the year. After a year of restrictions, Formula D welcomes back fans this weekend, and we expect nothing but high energy and very stiff competition with 32 drivers set to battle it out.

One driver we will be watching is Dai Yoshihara, who took home the overall FD championship ten years ago, driving a Nissan S13. He’s since moved onto a Subaru BRZ, which can summon up to 1,600hp thanks to a turbocharged LS motor. He’s been competing in the BRZ since 2014, still hungry and hopeful of finding his way back into the winner’s circle. He just might this year with a new livery that’s got race fans talking.

Gone is last year’s clean white look. In its place is a livery any motorsport enthusiast can appreciate. Dai explains the livery designed by artist Jon Sibal and applied by Daley Visual draws inspiration from the Subaru Super GT and Nurburgring 24-hour race cars, which both wear a bold blue color with pink/magenta accents. According to Dai, there’s also a second source of inspo derived from the Calsonic Nissan GT-R, which is one of his favorite cars of all time. Dai aimed to match the blue on his BRZ as best as possible to the historic R32 Skyline. The end result is nothing but stunning!

I snapped these quick photos outside of Eimer Engineering before Dai left for Atlanta, which admittingly don’t do the new livery justice. However, rest assured, under the bright lights of the track with a cloud of smoke coming from the rear tires, this will be one photogenic drift car you don’t want to miss in action.
