Grid Icons Car Show Slated to Celebrate the Mustang’s 60th Anniversary Ahead of Woodward Dream Cruise
- Pit+Paddock’s Grid Icons car show will honor the Ford Mustang’s 60-year history at M1 Concourse in Detroit, Michigan.
- M1 Concourse is an 87-acre motorsport property adjacent to Woodward Avenue—the stretch of road hosting the annual Woodward Dream Cruise.
- Woodward Dream Cruise attracts over 1,000,000 people and 40,000 classic cars from all around the world.
- Timing the two events was strategic and will bring a new audience together for the 5th Grid Icons car show series chapter.
In life, anything can become a spark. After hosting our most impactful Grid Icons show to date, Modified Porsche, we knew our follow-up effort would have to build upon that momentum. Fortunately, we already had a plan in motion; the fifth Grid Icons car show was aptly timed to recognize one of America’s most iconic models: the Ford Mustang.
Our spark came from happenstance; the States’ version of the prancing horse is celebrating its 60th anniversary. The marque appropriately nodded to the occasion with a Special Edition ‘stang for prospective buyers, a heritage-inspired gauge cluster for current ones, and blew the covers off of a Mustang Experience Center that will tie them both together near Charlotte Motor Speedway. “Mustang has always been about more than just the car; it’s the experiences that come with it, from road trips to track days to cars & coffee,” said Matt Simpson, Ford’s general manager for Enthusiast Vehicles. Indeed, it’s been a big year for the Mustang, and Pit+Paddock’s Grid Icons assemblage—presented by Vibrant Performance and Weld Racing—will help add to that fervor.
THE DREAM CRUISE
If it feels like Grid Icons: Ford Mustang is hot on the heels of our previous event, you’d be right. But like the shift from flat sixes to big blocks, the timing was equally intentional; the Woodward Dream Cruise, an automotive event that attracts more than a million people and 40,000 classic cars, kicks off the same weekend. The convergence will allow hundreds (if not thousands) more to experience Pit+Paddock’s unique, curated show first-hand. Our event, which takes place on Thursday, August 15, can be considered a fitting prelude to the rest of the weekend’s event schedule.
M1 CONCOURSE
It was important to find a location that would allow us to capitalize on the Woodward Dream Cruise festivities. We didn’t have to look too far to find it: M1 Concourse was built right off of the historic Woodward Avenue in a location easily accessible from every Detroit suburb and a stone’s throw from the two major highway arteries: I-75 and the M-59.
Pit+Paddock will take over a portion of M1’s 87-acre property to do what we do best. Some of the Mustang’s greatest hits will occupy M1 Concourse’s space inside and out, a healthy mix of domestic machinery that will help us collectively celebrate 60 years with proper pomp and circumstance. We did a site visit a couple of weeks ago to get a sense of the space. M1 Concourse had graciously emptied its halls, which allowed us to envision a car show staging layout to befit the occasion. As it turns out, M1 Concourse was no stranger to the Mustang; two models were already part of its driver fleet when we arrived and reaffirmed the venue as the right choice in Motor City.
