Eric Britton’s 1990 Honda Civic DX Hatchback is more than just a car; it is a ‘90s import-tuning relic built with passion and expertly taken care of so that a new generation can admire it. Initially purchased as a humble automatic DX model with a 1.5-liter engine, Britton’s Civic underwent a significant transformation.

By 1999, he had swapped in a 1.6-liter DOHC ZC engine from Japan and paired it with an Si transmission. He didn’t stop there—a GReddy turbo setup ensured the car had enough power to keep up with modern machinery and he added a pair of Recaro Speed seats and a rare JDM Si-R spoiler for good measure.

UNMATCHED ENTHUSIASM

You had to live through the ‘90s import-tuning scene to understand how pivotal it was, and Britton did. His Civic, with its custom RS Akimoto intake, Bosal Brospeed exhaust, and the distinct Chianti Red Metallic paint, captures the essence of this vibrant period. Back then, tuning magazines—like Super Street and Turbo High Tech—were instrumental in shaping the automotive dreams of enthusiasts. Britton’s Civic started its journey as a high school commuter to a period-correct masterpiece that exemplifies the excitement and passion of the tuner community during this golden age.

TRIBUTE TO AUTHENTICITY

Today, the landscape of car tuning has shifted dramatically. While modern Honda builds often emphasize high horsepower and K swaps, Britton’s Civic is a beacon of authenticity. The vehicle’s JDM parts were sourced through word-of-mouth before the internet era, adding to its allure. Britton’s dedication to preserving the Civic’s original character—despite advancements in automotive technology—serves as a reminder of how the car scene once thrived on creativity and personal expression.

PRESERVING A LEGACY

As the automotive world continues to evolve, Britton’s Civic reminds us that it’s more important than ever to preserve the spirit of the ’90s import tuning car culture. While modern trends often lean towards conformity, Britton’s Civic stands as a testament to the wild, inventive spirit of a bygone era, inviting new generations to appreciate individuality and creativity while building on the legacy of the genre.

“One thing I wish today’s import enthusiasts would do is build cars that are outside the box. We used to build cars to show our individuality, I think a lot of people just want to play it safe to fit in. I say go wild and build the car as you want it not what is considered the norm; however, keep it quality,” said Eric Britton.

With our Grid Icons: Golden Era event just around the corner, Britton’s Civic is a beacon for quality over quantity that helped inspire the show’s theme. For the PA locals, be sure you look out for this one at our highly anticipated Cars+Coffee season closer at Turn 14 Distribution HQ!
